The Outside and the In
Face Claim/PB:
Josh Hutcherson
Appearance:
Slender, handsome, dark brown hair, brown eyes, cream jacket, red pants, black boots, white opera gloves…at least when he’s at a formal event. Henry stands about 5’11” and has the distinctive royal chin that many princes seem to have. When he’s not at a special event, he dresses in the most comfortable clothes he can wear and still be “royal,” usually meaning a loose-fitting shirt and pants with his favorite pair of boots. If he knows people are watching, he’ll stand tall and be on his best manners. Still, if you check closely, you’ll find food stains on even his nicest clothes, and if you catch him when he’s off guard you’ll see him slumped against the wall making faces at the guards. Around most people, he tries to keep his true feelings off his face. Around his friends, he’s extremely expressive, and until very recently, he was always wearing a smile.
Personality:
Kind, romantic, brave, determined, active, loyal. Some of these are the way he thinks of himself, and some were just assigned. Henry wouldn’t consider himself brave, at least no braver than some of the other people he’s met, but they tend to give a lot of nice titles to princes who don’t go around kicking puppies or terrorizing peasants. He does pride himself on his loyalty, however; once he makes a friend, it’s for life, and he’ll do anything to help his friends. He admits to being a bit of a romantic, truly believing that someday he’ll find the perfect love story. Having grown up an only child and a prince to boot, Henry is a little spoiled and tends to trust that he won’t ever get into real trouble, since he can always pull out the royal trump card. That doesn’t stop him from doing some dangerous things, like dressing down and wandering the city until he can find a good tavern to get drunk and play a few pranks until the inevitable fight erupts and he has to scoot. His desire to have fun outside the castle has always led him to try more and more dangerous things, though it’s become a lot harder recently, since the girls are starting to recognize him when he goes out. Sometimes he’s had to settle for going on longer hunting trips in the woods instead of wandering downtown. But since he’s not a big fan of actually killing things, the hunting trips inevitably devolved into shooting random arrows into trees and ordering servants to fetch them while he fed the animals.
Henry is good at lots of things: swordfighting, dancing, telling jokes, organizing tactical defenses in case of emergency, creating trade alliances with foreign nations…he’s been pretty good at being a prince, despite his tendency to shirk his duties on occasion. He’s not really sure of his own skills most of the time, though, since he’s still got a lot of practice to do on most fronts. Still, he’s usually a very upbeat person, and he believes that there is definitely a happily ever after waiting for him. Even though he’s currently feeling a little depressed due to his mother’s death, he’s almost guaranteed to pop back up at the end of it. He mostly takes his sadness out on himself, sullen when he’s alone but forcing himself to smile and act normal around everyone except his closest friends and family. He’s very aware of the need to keep up appearances in the public eye, and looking like a strong leader is one of his top priorities.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History:
The ease of growing up as a prince cannot be easily exaggerated. Henry never wanted for anything—he had his parents’ affection, the best teachers, good food, and a huge castle to play hide-and-seek in. Sure, he had to learn how to rule an entire country, but there were advisors to help with that, and it really wasn’t the sort of thing that young Henry ever concerned himself with. He spent his free time reading adventure stories and running around in the woods, the town, and eventually the entire country. Troubles were few and far between for the first 18 years of his life.
Once he became an adult, Henry was expected to take over a little more control so that his parents could finally start to take some time for themselves. He stepped up and began to practice his politics alongside his court etiquette, which his tendency to clumsiness had never quite permitted him to excel at. For a year, things went well, and he was able to learn how to rule while his parents took some much-deserved time off. At the end of the year, Henry proposed a long trip to his parents, spending time in other countries in order to build alliances there and to learn various cultural habits and skills. While they were not overly pleased about having their son gone for so long, both the king and queen agreed that it was a good idea for Henry to spend some time traveling and learning.
Just a month before the trip was scheduled to begin, the queen became suddenly ill. The doctors were unable to do anything, and she died within a week. Henry put off his trip, and he and his father took time to mourn. Eventually, though, Henry decided to continue with the trip, trusting his father’s various advisors to help rule the country until the king was able to step up again. It was a chance to deal with his grief on his own instead of always being under public scrutiny, and the goals of the journey remained important. Henry would be able to grieve and move on in his own time.
Key Moment: Henry was riding his horse to a neighboring country, the first stop on his trip. He stopped in a clearing to have lunch and just dismounted, then reached to undo his horse’s saddle, only to find that his horse was no longer there and the entire world was spinning.

Henry fell onto the grass in front of him and put a hand over his mouth. He glanced around but didn’t see anyone, so he crawled over to a patch of flowers and threw up into them. He waited for his dizziness to pass and slowly stood up. There was a house, unlike any he’d ever seen, with an orange tabby cat sitting on the front step. The cat hissed at him and stalked away. Henry resisted the urge to hiss back and instead looked around at the completely unfamiliar environment.
“Where…?” he began, unable to even finish the sentence. Who was even around to hear it?
“Good afternoon,” said a voice behind him.
Henry spun to see a man dressed in a strange black suit. He looked down at his own travel clothes, suddenly feeling embarrassed that he wasn’t in his dress uniform. It was always important to greet other dignitaries while looking your best, Mother always said.
Mother. Henry had forgotten. How could he have forgotten? He needed to find her, she was sick, she needed him, why was he going on a trip when he needed to be by her bedside? “The queen,” he said to the man, since there was no one else around. “I need to find the queen. Which way is the castle?”
“I’m afraid there aren’t any castles around here,” the man said with a sad smile. “What is your name? We’d like to meet you properly.”
“Prince Henry,” Henry said distractedly, still wondering where the castles were, and now starting to wonder how the man had gotten here without a horse. He suddenly realized his manners and turned to address the man. “I beg your pardon. I am not myself. My name is Prince Henry Charmant of Faraway. It is a pleasure to meet you.” He smiled, trying not to panic.
“It is good to meet you Prince…Charming? My name is George. Please, allow me to take you to a place where you can clean up and begin to feel better.”
Henry nodded and continued looking around for the horses. “I had—have a friend named George. Good guy,” he said distractedly. “How, er, how will we be traveling?”
George gestured to a strange contraption that almost looked like a carriage, if something so clearly made of heavy metal could ever move, even if there were horses around. “Please, get in and I will drive you to Tenebrae, where we host our guests. I will explain as we go.”
Henry nodded hesitantly and got into the metal carriage. “And then I can go find my mother?”
“Let’s start with getting you cleaned up.” George started the car, causing Henry to start and clutch at the door frame, and they began the drive to Tenebrae.
