Appearance:
Helena is an attractive black-haired, brown-eyed woman who knows exactly how to dress to impress. She likes to wear clothes that flatter her fit figure (heels, tight skirts or jeans, and a fancy blouse), and she’s not afraid to whip out a formal gown or revealing costume on the proper occasion. She walks confidently, and her posture coupled with her heels often makes her look taller than her 5’5.” Overall, her look is tailored to send a clear message: out of your league. The moment she steps into her classroom, however, Helena becomes the model of a good teacher, engaging with her students and smiling at them often. She can still be stern, but she cares too much about helping people to keep up the mean shell with everyone. Most of the time, though, the only expressions she wears are disdain and anger. True happiness only shows when she’s in the middle of beating up a criminal.
Personality:
Helena feels very strongly about her opinions, and she doesn’t usually change her mind. This determination (stubbornness) was a great motivator when she decided to join the ranks of the masked vigilantes in Gotham, but it also means she butts heads with just about everyone she meets. She is impetuous and doesn’t always think through her plans. She has had a lot of trouble holding down a job and keeping friends, a fact that hasn’t helped her hot temper very much. She firmly believes in justice, but her definition of what that is might be a bit vague and include room for revenge. She’s not really one for sitting down and talking about feelings; her communication skills in general are good for getting her what she wants—a good one-liner, telling someone to back off, flirting—but not so great for building relationships. If you respect her and her background, she may start to respect you, too…eventually. If you get on her bad side, she won’t forget, and her grudges can get pretty nasty. Helena enjoys fighting, especially mixed martial arts and crossbows, and she doesn’t like anyone who disagrees with her.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History:
Helena Bertinelli was the only child of Franco and Maria Bertinelli. She was too young to realize that her father was a mob boss in downtown Gotham when her parents died—all she knew at the time was that the slimeball Mandragora gunned down Franco and Maria while she looked on, hidden away in a closet. Her early encounter with death and the underbelly of Gotham left her both scarred and determined to fix it. Someday, she swore, she would also take down Mandragora, just as he had killed her parents.
She learned various fighting skills and put together a costume to become the Huntress, a masked vigilante on the streets of Gotham. She wasn’t the only hero in Gotham—she wasn’t even one of the big ones, with the rest of the Bat family running around. She was just the crazy one, the one you really wanted to avoid getting caught by because her line of acceptable conduct was pushed just a little bit farther; her arrows were still the pointy kind that went straight through you. All the same, she made enough noise for the Justice League to recruit her into their ranks when they went international…at least for a short time.
Helena used the Justice League’s intel to help track down Mandragora and try to kill him. The Justice League revoked her membership, not wanting murderers in their ranks. So she joined up with The Question, another crazy hero who happened to still be a League member, and hunted down Mandragora anyway, making enemies with some of the other Leaguers at the same time (most notably Black Canary). She chose not to kill Mandragora in the end, leaving him to a prison cell instead, and began dating The Question. She works independently from the League, but she still works with Q when he needs it.
Key Moment:
Spying Black Canary getting taken down by a pickpocket, Helena put a tracker on Canary’s motorcycle and began to follow her, giving Question a call to let him know her location. She watched Canary enter an old factory, and then she shifted. (Beginning of “Grudge Match.”)

A Roleplaying Shift
RP Sample:
The last Helena remembered, she had been on her way to attack Mandragora, having finally learned his location after months of searching. Now she was standing in the middle of someone’s house, watching a boy eating cereal dribble milk down his chin while Mom poured orange juice on the kitchen counter.
“Where am I?” she said, looking around. She kept her hand on her crossbow but didn’t pull it out—no need to scare what appeared be an innocent family. “Who are you people? Who brought me here? Where’s Mandragora?”
The boy swallowed his food very slowly. “Why do you have a mask?” he asked, pointing at her face. Helena frowned. She’d hoped that more people might know her by now…
“I’m the Huntress. And I’m looking for someone. A criminal. Do you know—“
At that moment there was a loud knock on the door, and the woman in the kitchen finally managed to shakingly put a lid on the orange juice and go to answer it. A man entered and smiled at Helena.
“Please make her leave,” the woman was whispering. “I don’t know where she came from, and she has a weapon, and I have never seen a proper woman dressed like that.”
Helena frowned. “So maybe the stomach window wasn’t the best choice,” she said, “But that hardly means—“
“Would you like to come with me, ma’am?” the man asked, gesturing toward the door.
She frowned, crossed her arms, and tapped her foot on the tile. “That’s the second time you interrupted me,” she said. “Why don’t you answer my questions for me?”
“I’d be happy to do that in the car on our way to Tenebrae,” the man said, still infuriatingly vague.
Looking at the boy in the kitchen, Helena decided not to draw her weapon. If this man was doing something to round up superheroes, she wasn’t going to turn a kitchen into a war zone. There would be time for that later. “All right,” she said with a cautious nod, following the man out. She let him open the door for her and slid in, ready to defend herself, but all that happened was the man drove her to a place where she was supposed to be living.
“Please,” Helena said, looking around. “A fancy prison is still a prison. I’ll find the other heroes, and then I’m killing Mandragora.”
