The Outside and the In
Face Claim/PB
Pat Morita
Appearance: Most notable for his whiskers and his, er, girth, Iroh is a jovial man who is always ready to share a smile. He has a wide, open face, wrinkled by experience and age. His grey hair and piercing dark eyes help to further this image of wisdom. He walks with a slow and steady gait, made even more slow and perhaps waddle-like by his weight. While he used to have a top knot, long hair, and a considerable beard, he cut off his top knot a few weeks ago and chose to trim down the rest of his hair when he shifted over and moved to Tenebrae. He has also chosen a new style of dress, wanting not only to fit in with the locals but also to be comfortable. He thinks that Hawaiian t-shirts look good, as well as flip-flops and sweats. No one has corrected his fashion decisions.
Iroh has a strong presence that belies his mere 5’3” stature, and it doesn’t all come from his width. He walks with confidence and assurance, not willing to simply be led. Despite the fact that he often looks completely relaxed and unfocused, he is always vigilant, eyes and ears open to new danger, watching out for those around him and for himself.
Personality: Iroh has been described as “a different man” from who he was in his early years. Whoever he might have been before his son’s life and death, since then Iroh has become easygoing, open-minded, warm, caring, generous, friendly, advising, kind, and humorous. He is always respectful and welcoming toward people he doesn’t know, and he always remembers the people he comes to know. He is also respectful of the four elements and emphasizes the importance of harmony within the world. He had the ability to see spirits in his own world, and his connections with both the physical and the spiritual world were very well developed. He uses humor, often self-deprecating, in order to make other people feel more comfortable in his company. Iroh values appreciating life as it comes, and he firmly believes that all people have the right and the responsibility to forge their own path and discover the destiny that is truly laid out for them. While he is often relaxed because he wants to live life to the fullest and recognizes that there are some things in life that cannot be controlled, he also is determined to forge his own path and help his nephew do the same, since he believes in the importance of taking responsibility for the things in life that can be changed.
Iroh enjoys art, especially music, and he plays several instruments and knows many songs. His love of art, along with his desire to preserve harmony among all four elements, drew him to become a member of the Order of the White Lotus. Iroh trusts his friends within this group, and he is willing to call on them in his time of need. He is respectful of many people but fully trusts only a few. He loves his family, especially his nephew, and is patient and forgiving in trying to draw Zuko toward a better path. Iroh loves to give advice, and while it is not always clear to everyone what he is saying, his stories and lessons are always designed to help others to live better lives.
Aside from liking music, Iroh is also very fond of tea. His particular favorite is ginseng, but he likes a good cup of just about anything. He enjoys food in general, but he is willing to go to extra lengths for a cup of tea, even if it almost gets him killed. Perhaps the tea is part of what makes him so easy-going; it is said to have a very soothing effect on people. Then again, Iroh has never been so calm that he is unprepared for a battle, always able to go very quickly from being at ease to being in a fighting stance. He is very skilled at fighting, and he is one of the most skilled firebenders of his time. While he is willing to use fire and can even make and redirect lightning, a technique he invented himself, Iroh’s skills have never been solely dependent on his bending, and he is perfectly capable in ordinary hand-to-hand combat as well.
A master of apparent opposites, Iroh would enjoy nothing more than working in his own tea shop serving customers, or perhaps hiring other people to serve for him. At the same time, should anything threaten him or anything that he cared about, he is willing to do whatever it takes to change the world and create a better future, one that everyone can live and prosper in.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History:
Iroh was born the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, and with this title he began his education, which would eventually lead him to visit the Sun Warriors and meet the dragons Ran and Shaw, who taught him the truth of firebending. He recognized even then the importance of protecting the past, and claimed to have killed the last dragon, earning him the title “Dragon of the West.” He had a fancy title, was a general in the Hundred Year War, and had a small but loving family with his son. At the battle of Ba Sing Se, however, a place he had dreamed would be the site of his greatest victory, he lost everything. His son, Lu Ten, died in battle, causing Iroh to leave the siege in shame and dishonor. When his father died suddenly, the crown passed over Iroh, the older brother, and went instead to the new Fire Lord Ozai, father of Zuko and Azula. Iroh did not complain.
In his grief, Iroh journeyed the world searching for answers. His journey was a spiritual one and led to a change of goals, from desiring to become a great general and Fire Lord in the Fire Nation to wanting a slower life, full of love and joy. His desire to enrich relationships helped him to bond with his nephew Zuko after he finally returned home. Zuko, who had lost his mother, welcomed the extra attention. When Zuko was scarred and banished by his father due to the 13-year-old’s decision to speak up in a meeting that Iroh had permitted him to attend, Iroh took on Zuko as a surrogate son and traveled with him in order to keep his nephew safe and to try to convince him of the importance of things in life other than honor and position.
Iroh followed Zuko in his pursuit of the Avatar, from the south to the north pole, and back into the Earth Kingdoms. There they escaped arrest from Iroh’s niece and Zuko’s sister, Azula, largely due to Iroh’s suspicion of his brother Ozai’s good feelings and Azula’s apparent kindness. While Iroh believes in his nephew, he is cautious of the rest of his family, and he and Zuko went into hiding together in the Earth Kingdom in order to avoid capture by the Fire Nation. While Iroh was able to take his change of circumstances in stride, he could see the strain on his nephew. He hoped that Zuko wouldn’t do anything rash.
Key Moment: Iroh waited in the forest for his nephew to return from his walk. When he didn’t come back for a while, he decided to go back to the village and look for Zuko.

A Roleplaying Shift
RP Sample:
Iroh was quite certain that he had very recently been walking through a forest, but when he looked around, he could see that he was instead walking down a very nice street lined with trees, street lamps, and houses. Pausing in the middle of the road, he looked around to see if anyone was there, but the entire place seemed abandoned. He looked up at the crescent moon.
“Well this is unexpected,” he said calmly. “I wonder what sort of a place this is.”
He wandered up and down the street a few minutes more, looking for any clues as to how he might have arrived in this new place and wondering if his nephew might have arrived here before him. Wherever he was, the sense of energy that connected himself to his firebending and to the world around him appeared to be in a strange state of flux. In fact, he seemed to be rather gassy due to the strange imbalance of not having his chi properly centered.
“Excuse me,” he said to no one after a particularly bad bout of gas. But to his surprise, someone spoke up behind him.
“I’m sorry, excuse me,” the woman said.
Iroh turned and saw a stranger dressed in very unusual clothing. He looked the woman up and down and grinned. “No, really,” he said, “I’m afraid I am the one who is lost here and causing quite a stink up this street.” He waved his hand in front of his nose and grinned. “To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?”
The woman seemed a bit surprised, but she said, “My name is Kat, and I work with people like you, who have shifted. Would you mind telling me who you are?”
Iroh paused for a moment, debating what name to give. “I am General Iroh of the Fire Nation,” he said, taking a chance. “I am looking for my nephew, Zuko. Have you seen him?”
The woman smiled. “All people who have shifted are brought to Tenebrae. Would you like to come with me there?” She held out her hand, pointing the way. “It is very nice to meet you, General Iroh. Do you have a last name?”
Iroh laughed. “Do you know, I can’t seem to think of one. I suppose you will have to give me one yourself.” He chuckled again.
“Is something funny?” Kat asked, confused.
“Yes,” he said with another small laugh. “I was just thinking, my nephew and I were trying to hide from someone. We never thought of coming here!” He suddenly grew serious. “Tell me, miss, do you have any tea? I would love a nice cup of jasmine.”
