Applejack had only been at Tenebrae a few days. Most of that time had been spent at her new house with Twilight and Rainbow. She was happy that she shared a house with her friends, but the two girls seemed different, in more ways than just appearance. She was still getting used to her new body; she didn’t really think she could get used to them too, not all at the same time. Besides, she needed space, literally. She felt so cramped living so close to so many other people. She needed wide open fields or the peace and quiet of a forest. Things she just couldn’t find where she was now. Rainbow had told her about the field and the forest at the edge of the community. It seemed like exactly what she needed, so she’d left the house early that morning in search of peace and space.
That really had been her plan, so what was she doing here instead? Applejack was now standing stock still in front of a bright, red barn. It was the last building on the street with a sign attached reading Wild Acres. The barn looked almost exactly like the one at Sweet Apple Acres, only better kept. She could almost picture Big Mac coming through the door and heading to the orchards. Her heart pounding hard, she walked towards the door silently.
As soon as Applejack opened the door, the warm smell of horses greeted her nose. As a person who used to be a pony,, she recognized the smell instantly. She tilted her head in confusion. That couldn’t be right. Why would there be horses here? Why hadn’t they Shifted like she had? Curious, she walked farther into the barn. It was a shadowy place; the only light came from the open door at the opposite end. All around her, she could horses as they moved around their stall. What was going on? Had she somehow Shifted back? Was she actually a pony again? She looked at her hands in disappointment. Nope, still human. Then why were there horses locked up like this? She moved over to a stall, intending to let the horse inside free.
“Howdy there!” The stable hand shouted out to the woman standing near Bullet’s stall. “I wouldn’t get too close. Bullet likes to bite strangers.”
Applejack jumped back, startled by the sound. She turned to see a man leading a horse into the barn. “Bullet?” She asked as she looked behind her to the horse she’d been about to free. “is that your name?” Bullet didn’t answer, just bowed his head to his food through. She realized with a sudden jolt that these horses couldn’t talk. Without turning, she talked to the stable hand. “He bites you said? Is that why he’s being held prisoner?”
The stable hand chuckled. “Prisoner?” He shook his head. “This a stable, ma’am, not a horse jail. We keep horses here for people to ride.”
Appllejack spun to face the stable hand, her mouth open in shock. “People ride horses?”
“Of course, they do.” The stable hand looked at the blonde woman suspiciously. “Why are you here if you don’t want to ride?”
“I—uh…” Applejack stuttered as she tried to think of a reason for being there. “I was curious.” This much was true, though she wasn’t sure she could tell him her other reason. The barn had looked so much like the one at home, that she’d been hoping to find her brother or sister here. Of course, now she was glad she hadn’t.
“Hm.” The stable hand looked at the woman for a long moment before turning away. “Well, I have to brush Carrot here.” He nodded at the horse he was leading. “You can look around if you like, but stay away from Bullet. I wasn’t lying when I said he bites.”
Applejack nodded her head slowly. She was already planning to leave, not wanting to spend too much time here. What if she suddenly turned back into a pony, and they locked her up? She shook her head and started walking backwards to the door.
