The Outside and the In
Face Claim/PB
Christopher Lee (as Saruman)
Appearance:
In the land of Ooo, Ice King was a transformed human, his visage changed by the crown he still wears. Now, he has not changed back to his original form, but rather a mixture of what he became and what he used to be. His general body type has stabilized as tall and lean, though he still seems to hunch over a lot, making him seem smaller than he actually is. Ice King’s skin has also returned to a light color, a bit paler than it was as a human. His most prominent feature is his snow white hair, which, due to balding, covers only half of his head and runs into his long, grizzly beard. His face is gaunt and flecked with age spots, with dark sunken eyes, wildly bushy eyebrows, and a long, hooked nose. In comparison to his looks, Ice King’s voice comically mismatches, being pinched and nasal, and prone to having a bit of a rough, cracked edge to it. Overall, he appears to be a rather defenseless old man, slow and trudging in his gait, but able to exert a lot of movement and energy when upset.
Although he has a vast wardrobe supplied by the Tenebrae staff, he still demands to wear robes when possible, mostly white or blue in color, with no or simple embroidery embellishments. However, when forced to, he will wear a tweed suit, bow tie and vest, an unconscious throw back to his days as Simon. His eyesight is a bit poor, and yet the Ice King refuses to wear glasses, as he is embarrassed by the fact he used to wear them. One thing he is rarely seen without is a golden crown with three large rubies set in it.
Personality:
Many people have toted Ice King as utterly insane, but mostly harmless, and he continues to be this way, if not slightly more crazy, upon being shifted. The madness brought on by the mysterious crown Ice King wears constantly meddles with his memory, his temperament, and every so often causes a strange desire for destruction and power. However, being shifted seems to have muddled Ice King’s brain more than usual, or perhaps being in a non-magic area has weakened the crown’s hold on him, since occasionally flashes of his past life as Simon are returning to him. Sometimes he appears to be aware of what the crown has done to him, but mostly not, and in general his memory is faulty. Ice King still thinks that his multitudes of penguin-servants are around, but are hiding from him. In general, Ice King can ignore reality and substitute his own.
Even with his mood swings and tendency for emotional turmoil, the Ice King is more or less a pretty friendly guy, always wanting to hang out and ‘kick it’ with anyone who will spend a few minutes talking to him. In fact, one might say he’s desperate for any human contact at all. However, his general social ineptitude and creepy-awkwardness causes most people to back away slowly. Add in his stubbornness, tendency to be selfish, and egotistical views, and Ice King often finds himself alone. But many times he doesn’t accept no for an answer, particularly with princesses, and will often attempt to kidnap them and force them to marry him. But truly, this is only because he is lonely and cannot accept when others reject him.
When accepted by others, Ice King is often enthusiastic, wanting to prove his worth. He likes to be seen as ‘cool’, and loves music, writing fan fiction, and making videos of himself. He can be a kind and gentle old man, most likely remnants of his life as Simon. When his mind tilts more to his Simon-like ways, he is calmer, intelligent, and caring, but that is soon submerged under his Ice King persona. His magic is extremely limited now, but he may sporadically be able to do as much as freeze a glass of water when his crown is in his possession. He still claims to have his “Wizard Eyes” where he can see things others cannot, but it is also likely he’s merely having hallucinations.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History:
The Ice King was originally born as a human named Simon Petrikov. It is suspected that he lived in the Land of Ooo before it was called such. He was a professor, an archeologist and an antiquarian, and collected and catalogued many ancient artifacts. He lived happily with Betty, his fiancée, whom he referred to as his ‘princess’. Simon eventually came into having a strange crown, purchased from a Scandinavian dock worker. He placed it on his head to amuse Betty, but Simon blacked out and was faced with terrible visions. Having being consumed in these visions, he returned to reality to find that Betty had been disturbed by what she saw. She left Simon, never to return.
Simon began to record himself, aware of what the crown was doing to him. His physical and mental state was slowly being corrupted by its magic, but it allowed him to survive a terrible war, known as the Mushroom War. In the war’s aftermath, he found a small vampire child by the name of Marceline, gained her trust by giving her a stuffed toy, and became her guardian for a period of time. However, to survive the apocalyptic world, Simon began relying on the crown’s powers more and more, disfiguring his body and losing his mind, until he abandoned Marceline and became a hermit.
Many hundreds of years passed, and Simon completely forgot his true identity. Now completely subsumed by the crown, he took over the frigid lands of the north and titled himself the Ice King. Eventually, he established himself as a minor nuisance to the other kingdoms, kidnapping their princesses and generally making a fool out of himself. Mostly he wanted to learn about friendship and how to be happy.
Key Moment: Desperately wanting his fan fiction world of ‘Fiona and Cake’ to come to life, Ice King attempted a complex portal spell and botched it, resulting in a catapulting into a shift.

”Extraction compl... return shor…”
Ice King could feel his eyelids flutter. His limbs were heavy, and his chest felt as if something was pressed down on it. He wondered for a moment if Gunther had snuck into bed with him. Gunther was always the baby of the group. Ice King made a note to teach him how to man up, once he figured out how to move his arms.
”Ubject currently…”
Huh. There was that voice again. What exactly was an Ubject, anyway? The voice seemed to be faint, yet in close proximity at the same time. There was a strange sensation from his toes to his nose, something that was making his skin prickle. It felt… so different. What was this feeling that was raising little goose-eggs on his body? Ice King tried to move his arms again, but to no avail.
”Appears to be uncon… but no injuries, thankfully.”
The voice was getting clearer, and finally, Ice King shot upright like a bolt, long strands of white hair flipping forward, casting cold water droplets everywhere. This was not where he was supposed to be. Instead of the fractured blue walls of his castle, there was metal all around him, a stiff plastic bed underneath him. No, no, this was all wrong!
He felt a gentle touch on his shoulder that made him jump a little, and his gaze instantly moved to the woman beside him. Blonde, like Fionna… but definitely not her. Ice King’s eyebrows knitted, but the woman simply gave a reassuring smile. ”How are you feeling?” She said with a gracious, friendly warmth. It was an odd question for the wizard to hear, but eventually, the Ice King blurted out, ”Wet. And kind of tingly on my backside.”
The blonde woman’s hands fell to wringing in front of her black pencil skirt,”You fell into the ocean. You’re perfectly safe, though. Our ship arrived just in time.”
”Ship? You mean, like a cruise?” Ice King was now reaching up into his hair, which, indeed, was wet with salt water. He gave a little moment to ponder this before he realized the woman was still talking. His eyes finally looked back to her and listened. ”I need your name, sir. Can you hear me?” The woman bit her lip in frustration. The Ice King ruffled his hands through his hair, trying to fling more water droplets out of them, ”Hmm? Yeah, yeah, I heard you.”
”Sir, if you don’t give me a name, I’ll have to assign you one.” The blonde lady’s hand reached out again, since touch had been something that had snapped him out of his confusion the last time. But this time, Ice King avoided her hand, scrambling off of the bed but stopped. Oh, yeah. Something felt off. He was still for a long while, blankly gazing ahead before finally speaking again, ”Uh… Put down Simon… uh… Petre—Petra… Petrikov? With a V.” He glanced over to two men in black suits guarding the door out of there. Well, this wasn’t a very nice looking cruise, and ol’ Ice King was gonna bust out of it. Now ignoring the woman’s pleas for him to sit back down on the bed, he addressed the men at the door with a cheerful tone,”Hey, fellas!” and then raised his hands and, as maliciously as he could, shouted at them, ”Ha! Eat this!”
But nothing happened. And that’s when he realized what was wrong. He was missing his crown! Looking around for it wildly, he finally spotted it on a makeshift table and dove for it as if his life was in danger. The two suited men tensed, but did not move as Ice King placed the crown in its proper spot, ”What kinda cruise is this, taking people’s things? I am so not giving you a recommendation.” Once again ignoring the blonde lady’s requests to calm himself, Ice King raised his arms above his head and threw them out in front of himself… but there was no magic at all. The wizard stood there for an awkward moment with his arms extended before removing his crown and feverishly polishing it, ”Darn thing’s batteries… at the worst possible moment… geez…”
Finally, the blonde woman could take no more and placed herself directly in front of the old man still scrubbing at his crown, ”Mr. Petrikov, you are far from home, but I assure you, we’re here to help you.” Now forced to pay attention to the young woman, the Ice King stared blankly at her for a few seconds before coming back to the present, ”You know, honey, your attention is quite flattering, but I’m really just more of a princess guy… I mean, if you really want to date me or something, we can talk it over, but…” The wizard took a moment to seethe in indecision and the blonde grabbed the opportunity to interrupt him, ”Sir, we are currently moving you to your temporary residence, the Tenebrae Estates. While we work on a way to return your home, we will ensure that your stay there is as comfortable as possible. Do you understand me, Mr. Petrikov?”
There was another bout of silence as the Ice King processed what he was told, ”Oh, I get it! Silly me.” The old man chuckled, ”This is one of those vacation package things. Cruise and a hotel thing, right?” The blonde woman opened her mouth to begin to correct him, but Ice King was already rambling off the things he was planning to do during his ‘vacay’ and how Gunter was going to have to run the kingdom while he was away. After looking to the men at the door and only receiving emotionless shrugs from them, she sighed and made her way back to her clipboard.

Tell us a Little About Yourself!: Hm, well, I like stories. I like the weird characters in them. I like to imagine them dancing around to songs I hear on the radio. I like writing with people who like conflict and action in their stories. I like original plots. I like ponies. I like video games. I like roleplaying. I’m a strange person, but people seem to like me sometimes anyway!
