The Outside and the In
Face Claim/PB
- Riyu Kosaka
Appearance: Therru is a girl of Asian descent, though the exact ‘type’ of Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc.) is not something that is identifiable. She has longer brown hair that extends past her shoulders, with just a tint of something lighter, maybe red, to it, messy bangs, and a slight curl to her hair that she didn’t have before. In short, when Therru looks in the mirror… It’s like seeing a sister. Someone that’s like you, looks like you, but isn’t. It’s unnerving. One thing remains the same, though, despite her alterations in her appearance, and that is the burn scar, extending over the left half of her face. Skin red, puckered, her eyesight in that eye damaged and not as good as the other… It’s permanent, something she tends to hide away, but now, it’s almost a comfort. Even though there are nuances in her appearance that have changed, that remains the same.
On her physical build, she’s on the shorter side, below average height, but she isn’t super thin, of a stockier build (heavier than she appears, that’s for sure!), arms, legs, and torso thick-ish with muscles, both from her inherent inhuman nature, apparent even here, something that has crossed over, and from all of the many years of hard work from tilling the farm with Tenar. After all, they don’t usually have a pair of boys to come work the fields for them!
Clothing-wise, she’s definitely still sticking to her Earthsea roots. She refuses to wear pants, finding the notion just… uncomfortable, and typically sticks with longer-sleeved dresses, to hide the burn that is also reflected on her left arm, red, puckered, and permanent. Pink is the preferred color, though red, purple, and brown are also acceptable, and she likes to pair it with leggings and boots, no matter the heat. Too much skin is not something that she wants to show. Jewelry is something absent from her, though in lieu of tying them in her hair, she wears a pair of pink ribbons tied around her wrists.
A promise to return.
Personality: Therru is a bit of a mix. If she doesn't know you, she won't talk to you. She doesn't like strangers. If you seem respectful, kind, pleasant... Then it's a shy sort of silence, meek and eventually growing into acceptance, opening up more and more. However, if she doesn't like you, it grows into an angry silence, interrupted by yells, scolding, outbursts, before there's nothing but silence once more. She's incredibly self-conscious of the scar on her face, as well, and tends to duck her head, pulling her hair to cover her face, and generally being, well... shy.
Despite that, she's a very passionate young girl. She has strong opinions on a great variety of topics, from life to magic to dragons to writing, and she is not afraid to voice her opinions, should someone contradict them in a way deemed horrid, and will almost never back down from her opinion. She may not argue with you over it, but she will stick to her guns and not give up on her thoughts. Therru is also incredibly persistent, determined, brave... No matter what happens, she won't give up, won't stop fighting until the very end, and even beyond the end.
Once she befriends someone, truly befriends them, hard as that may be, she's loyal to them forever. Therru can be incredibly kind, supportive, calming if she wants to... But at the same time, that goes with a heavy dose of judgement. She's had a bad past, and she isn't going to condone bad behavior, even if you've gone through a lot. She'll sympathize, offer advice, but if you're stepping out of line? Nooope, that's not okay. Friend, or no friend, stay in line.
Finally, even though she may be close friends with someone... She doesn't open up. Almost never, honestly. One has to sit down and ask every question they want an answer to, and be persistent about it, because she won't volunteer any information about herself, not if she doesn't have to. Heck, even when she has to. She doesn't want people to know.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History: Therru isn’t sure how she was born. How is one who is half-human, half-dragon born, anyway? Does that even work, anatomically? Or is it mostly symbolic?
Either way, no matter which it is, Therru’s early life did not consist of dragons. It consisted of an angry father, blows, ducks, dodges, practicing magic in secret, feeling the earth, flowers, trees, animals, life, and traveling, so much traveling. The memories are distant, blurred, faded, but she still remembers key events – Saving a baby fox, one time, helping it follow the trail home, the first time that she cupped a piece of fire in her hands, blowing on it gently, and not being burned, the only time she recalled a smile from her father and-
That night.
Don’t expect her to tell you about it, because she won’t. Tenar knows, though, some of it. Her father caught her doing magic, and accusing her of being a witch, shoved her into the fireplace, leaving her for dead and fleeing. Tenar came along just in time to save the beaten and burnt girl from dying, but the fire left its mark: A burn covering the left side of her face, and trailing down her left arm, as well.
Despite that, though, she grew to have a happy existence. Tenar took her in, and for the first year she was with her, she didn’t say a word. Tenar gave her her name, Therru, meaning fire, and it was a happy, comfortable life. Tending to the crops, helping Tenar with her medicines and potions, taking care of the animals… It took a bit, but slowly she began to talk more, too, opening up to Tenar (although her magic was kept secretsecretsecret), and beginning to treat the other like an older sister, or mother figure.
Given that she didn’t recall a mother, she wouldn’t know how to pick which one she was.
The local villagers did not like her, whispers of her being a witch floating about, and she had to be careful every time she and Tenar went to the city, for fear of being caught by slave-traders, but… Life was good.
Until the boy came.
She first met him when he saved her from slave traders, but his disregard for life in general… Did not endear him to her. Their next encounter was when he arrived with Sparrowhawk, a friend of Tenar’s, staying until he rested. Although Therru was still not his biggest fan, they slowly but surely began to open up to each other, her emotionally, him with the telling of his stories (she still never told anyone anything), and became what could, tentatively, be called friends.
When Tenar was kidnapped, Arren, the boy, disappeared, and Sparrowhawk was captured, though, everything changed. Therru had to be the one to carry Arren’s sword into Lord Cob’s, the one who had captured Tenar and Sparrowhawk, castle, encouraging him, building up his courage, his strength, and facing Lord Cob together. Despite the fact that she was the encouragement, she did not… do much, held captive by Lord Cob, until one point until he squeezed, squeezed, squeezed, and she-
Died.
That was when the epiphany came. She was dead, darkness and light surrounding her in equal amounts, and that was when Therru… understood. When Tehanu understood. She was one of the very few that was half-dragon, half-human. The songs that she heard, that she sang with all of her earth… Those were the true names, of everything, and the reason she did not speak to Tenar when she first arrived was because though she understood her… She could not speak it. For her native tongue was the ‘True Speech’, and when her father could not understand her, he beat her.
It came in just a matter of moments, scant moments where the dragon-girl embraced who she was, accepting it wholeheartedly for all the sense it made and… rose again. For you cannot kill a Dragon Lord that easily. Tehanu transformed, shifting, girl into light into dragon, and Cob was vanquished.
Arren was to return home. Sparrowhawk had restored the balance. Tenar was going back to the farm. And Therru? She… knew who she was, now. She didn’t know what she would do with that information, barring continuing working at the farm, but…
She had a long time to find out.
Key Moment: She was just waving good-bye to Arren and Sparrowhawk, watching them go until they disappeared, turning back to head back to the farm with Tenar, but- Then she wasn't there, anymore. [Aka: Right after the end of the movie.]

She choked on air, hand rising to her throat, eyes widening as she stood for a moment, staring, unseeing, into her outward surroundings, before falling to her knees, hands grasping at the grass, reaching for something solid.
Magic gone, magic gone, magic gone- No. It was there. Faint, faint, faint, but the true names of the world washed over her once more, and Therru sagged slightly in relief, eyes closing for an instant. Thank the gods, she had thought that it was-
That was when she became aware that someone was there. Therru jolted upwards, stumbling to her feet, staring, wide-eyed, at the man- men, men, in strange outfits, strange clothes, unfamiliar clothes, stepping towards her. Asking if she was... alright? Who she was? What...?
The girl swallowed sharply, eyes wide, her head tilting in a habitual manner to let her hair fall in front of the side of her face, shielding her scar from view, before she gave them, or, rather, the one that was speaking, tall with the lightest hair she had ever seen, a nod, her name cracking from her lips in a faint whisper. "Therru."
"Tara." He hadn't heard her right, and with her quiet voice... A hastily given last name of a whispered 'Tenar' gave her Taylor, and then they were asking if she wanted to go with them and if she was okay and if she remembered and-
She couldn't handle it. Therru turned on her heel and ran. Legs pumping, eyes closing, hair flying, going this way and that, path unclear, voices dimmed, the song, the song song song that was the True Speech oh too quiet-
Where was she?
