Face Claim/PB
Li Chun (AKA JunJun)
Appearance: Toph is a small, thin girl who appears to be of Asian descent. She is used to keeping her hair up in a hat, but that has been replaced with a new wardrobe provided by the Tenebrae staff. She now doesn’t bother with it and just lets her dark hair hang loose, with her bangs constantly falling across her face. Toph’s features are very fine and delicate, with a very round face, small, wide nose and large eyes. Her eyes have filled in with a russet brown color, though she still is blind. The rest of her body is just that of a skinny adolescent girl. Although, the confident way Toph holds herself gives the impression that she is older than thirteen and contrasts strongly with her frail frame.
Toph doesn’t care much about her physical appearance, though she doesn’t mind hearing a compliment now and again. However, since she cannot see her clothing, she simply wears whatever the staff gives her, and chooses more or less based on what is comfortable or feels nice. This leads to some interesting color/pattern match ups, but Toph doesn’t give one whit about it. The only thing she does care about is not wearing shoes—or at least wearing shoes that have had their bottom ripped off. Although the staff has tried to replace her modified shoes, Toph seems to always find something sharp and has torn apart or completely destroyed all the shoes she has been given.
Personality: If one was to call Toph a ‘tomboy’, you would get a general idea of the Blind Bandit’s personality. Incredibly exasperated with how her parents treated her like a delicate flower, Toph strived to become everything that was the opposite of that. Naturally aggressive and independent, confident and stubborn, Toph is much like the giant boulders that she used to be able to bend. If you want to be friends with her, do not treat her like a poor little blind girl, and rather prepared to be flattened by a right hook or a stinging verbal jab. Petite she may be, but Toph’s personality is big and she usually pushes away those who try to help her. Every challenge that is presented to her, even if it drives her to the brink of utter frustration, is something she wants to face head on and, for the most part, alone. She is adamant that she maintains her freedom and independence, no matter what the cost. And though being pitied for her blindness bothers her, in general, Toph is well adjusted about her disability, even joking about it every so often.
Her brash nature leads her to be friends with people with varying success. She is very non-judgmental and typically relaxed, but interacts with people in a rather blunt and straight-forward way. Toph is also very driven, and if asked to assist someone, will push that person to their limits. She also has a few quirks that may turn certain people off, such as never letting her shoes have soles, is generally uncouth, and is a bit lax about her physical appearance. But overall, Toph is a pretty normal kid, wanting to have fun, adventures, and be respected for who she is, that being a badass. Still, she had been sheltered for most of her life, and she is a little naïve about certain things like relationships or connecting into regular society. She does know how to conduct herself like a proper lady, but hates doing so. Since losing her earthbending ‘sight’, she tends to be a bit paranoid and irritable, and her instincts to run away have flared up, trying to think of ways to escape the Tenebrae staff.
Despite her blindness, Toph continues to train as well as she can in the physical aspects of her self-made martial art. She also still has acute hearing and is sensitive to vibrations, though to a much lesser extent than normal.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History:
Toph Beifong was born to Poppy and Lao Beifong, esteemed and very wealthy residents of the fine city of Gaoling in the Earth Kingdom. Upon discovering she had been born blind, Toph’s parents were very aggrieved, but devoted themselves to make sure their little girl was protected. They insisted that she would be attended to at all times, and they kept her existence a secret from most of the world. In her secluded realm, all Toph was expected to do was to be seen and not heard, and to become a proper lady.
But Toph grew to resent her parent’s treatment, and began to run away constantly, despite her blindness. In one of these excursions, she made her way into a cave inhabited by badgermoles. They connected due to their lack of sight, and the badgermoles taught Toph her earthbending skills. She began to use the vibrations around her and learned how to ‘see’ through feeling these vibrations. Her hearing also became remarkably sharp, so much so that she later she developed a knack to never forget a voice and could tell when people were telling the truth.
Earthbending became Toph’s true passion, and between the badgermoles and her diligence, Toph became a master of her own style of bending. While her father did hire an Earthbending teacher to teach her some earthbending moves, Lao stressed that Toph wouldn’t learn anything but beginners moves to keep Toph from over-exerting herself. Toph kept her mastery a secret from her family and her teacher.
However, she decided to put her skills to good use by entering an earthbending competition called Earth Rumble. She was incredibly successful, becoming the champion more than once, and earned the nickname ‘The Blind Bandit’. She was rather content with her double life when a certain young airbender showed up. This was Aang, the Avatar, who was convinced that Toph was to be his earthbending teacher. Toph was not so convinced, but eventually joined his group to escape her overbearing parents.
Toph’s brash personality made it hard for her to fit in with Aang and his group at first, but with some wise words from an old traveler she met, she realized that she could depend on others without giving up her freedom, and settled into the group as Aang’s teacher. The training was grueling, but Aang eventually gained a better concept of earthbending. During their travels, she became close friends with Katara and Aang, and developed something of a crush on Sokka. She continued to prove to be a valuable ally as they made their way to the city of Ba Sing Se and faced many dangers outside its walls and within them. The group found information that a solar eclipse would allow them to fight the Fire Nation without facing their firebending, and planned to get this information to the Earth King. But it wasn’t as easy as they had hoped.
Eventually, through much trial and tribulation, the ‘Gaang’ met with the Earth King, to tell him about the war he was completely ignorant of. Though reluctant, once he had proof, the Earth King gave his support to attack the Fire Nation. The group split up to accomplish various tasks, Toph receiving a letter from her mother that she was in Ba Sing Se and would like to see her. But the letter was a trick, and she was captured by her old earthbending teacher and the manager of the Earth Rumble fights and thrown in a metal cage which she could not escape out of.
However, through her desperation and her incredible skill, Toph Beifong became the world’s first metal bender, sensing small fragments of earth within the metal, and tore apart her metal cage. She wrapped the metal around her captors before dashing off to Ba Sing Se. She met Aang and Sokka along the way, and attempted to fight off the fire princess, Azula, but failed, and was temporarily captured. By the time that they escaped and had rescued the Earth King’s pet bear, Aang had been severely wounded in his fight against Zuko and Azula, and they had to make their escape. While Aang was healing and unconscious, the group managed to commandeer a Fire Nation ship and effectively hide from their army while Aang slept.
Key Moment: While camping out on the Fire Nation ship, a small fire broke out below deck. While Katara went to get water, Toph became a bit disoriented by the smoke and suddenly, the feeling of the Earth faded away.

The smell of smoke worked its way through her nose and deep down into her lungs, causing Toph Beifong to hack uncontrollably. Katara’s voice was fading down the hallway, but it was a bit hard to hear over her own coughing. She was coughing so hard, she felt her balance slipping a little—Ugh, this was not the time! But then… the smell of smoke was gone.
Everything was gone.
Instinctively, Toph spread her hands out in front of herself, expecting to find the cold metal of the ship, or maybe Sokka’s shoulder—this had to be some kind of practical joke that they were playing on her, right? Haha, make fun of the blind girl, get back at her for putting super-hot chilis into your rice pudding by putting her on something where she couldn’t feel vibrations. With an uneasy laugh, Toph called out, ”Okay, very funny, guys. Joke’s over now!” But there wasn’t a reply. They were just being jerks, she supposed, letting her twist in the wind for a little longer. She stamped her foot down, trying to put out some vibration, but her foot collided with something that definitely felt like dirt. She knew that feeling like it was a part of her. What was going on?!
”Guys?” Toph bellowed again, unsuccessfully keeping a nervous tremble out of her voice. She slowly crouched down and placed her hands on the ground. She could feel that it was solid ground beneath her, not a ship’s hull, and could recognize the leathery feel of fallen leaves scattered about all around her. But there wasn’t that image in her head. A pit welled in her stomach as she scrambled to her feet and she immediately tried to bend the earth around her. Nothing happened. Her bending was gone.
She could feel her breath quicken with the panic that flew through her head, but Toph tried to reason with herself. Maybe the fire had been some kind of Fire Nation attack and she blanked out for a moment and had been captured, and then they left her to die without her bending in the middle of nowhere… that made as much sense as anything else, she supposed. All she had to do was wait until the Chi blocking technique wore off. That would only take a few hours at most. But it was probably a good idea to hide, just in case some Fire Nation troops did come by.
Coming to her hands and knees again, Toph began to slowly push forward until her head gently bonked into the trunk of a tree. Tracing her fingers across the rough bark, she managed to figure out it was a pretty big one, and the girl managed to squeeze herself into a nook among its large roots. She could feel her body press against a large pile of leaves in the nook, so she took the slightly damp foliage and attempted to cover a good amount of her body with them. She had no idea whether she could be seen or not, but it was better than doing nothing.
Although doing nothing was what Toph did for about three hours underneath her leaf pile… and there was no sign of her bending returning. She was wondering if she should allow herself to go to sleep when her ears suddenly pricked. There were voices coming up from her left. Her entire body stilled, but her muscles tensed. The voices continued until she could hear them say something like, ”Target located. Approaching now.”
That did not sound good at all, and knowing that she had been discovered, Toph pushed herself from the ground, leaves falling from her, and attempted to run as well as she could—and promptly found what was probably a tree branch smack her across the face and throw her to the ground. The feeling of footsteps and the sound of seethes of empathy surrounded her and she found a pair of hands slide around her shoulders and help her to sit up, while another pressed a cloth to her nose, which she could now sense had blood streaming down from it. Toph gave something of a strangled cry, but the repeated soothing murmurs of a woman saying it would be okay stopped her from trying to resist for the moment.
”Fere am fi?” The cloth and blood muffled her speech, but the man holding her upright evidently understood her, since he replied, ”You’re somewhere safe now. We’re here to help you.”
Toph’s face scrunched up, dissatisfied with that answer. As the cloth was removed from her nose, the small girl spoke up with more hostility,”I need to get back to my friends. I think they’re in trouble.”
”Let’s worry about you first, honey.” The woman said, ”We can take you to a place to get you cleaned up, but we have to get your name first.” Noticing that Toph was about to protest, the woman hastily added, ”We’ll be able to help you there, but we need your name to ensure you can come with us.”
That was a rather strange requirement in Toph’s mind, but if it would get her on the road quicker, it would be worth it. Maybe there would be somebody who could unstick her Chi there,”Fine. I’m… Toph Beifong.” She tensed for a moment, prepared for the pair to suddenly turn on her, but they didn’t seem to react in any particular way to the Beifong name. Perhaps they were just some country bumpkins or something? But something just felt off… they didn’t talk like they were just random strangers passing by. Finally, Toph let the question that had been burning in her mind for hours loose, ”Do you guys know why my bending isn’t working?”
There was a palpable pause before the woman spoke again, ”I’m afraid your bending doesn’t work here. You’re in a land very far from home, Toph. But we will do everything in our power to help you to return to your friends and family.”
The look of shock must have been obvious on Toph’s face, since she felt the lady try to grasp her hand to reassure the teen. But soon shock faded away into anger and mistrust. People passing by were not this generous. Toph could practically smell the agenda on them, ”No, I don’t think so. Let me go; I’ll find my friends myself.” Toph attempted to stand, though with the lack of her sight and the two people around her, she found she couldn’t.
”Miss Beifong, please reconsider,” The man pleaded gently, though his grip on her shoulders tightened considerably. This simply caused Toph’s heart rate to skyrocket, and panic set in again, ”No! Get your hands off me!” She wrested herself away from the man’s grip and reached out to pull herself up with a tree, or anything she could find. Ignoring their requests for her to sit down and swatting away their hands as they tried to calm her, Toph finally found the rough bark on the tree and shakily rose to her feet. She adopted her mantis stance. Even at this disadvantage, she could probably fight well enough to escape... maybe.
Although it seemed that their numbers were growing, as Toph could suddenly hear more footsteps. It was difficult to tell how many, and the girl spun from one side to another, unsure of who could be coming from where. And suddenly her arms were caught and pulled behind her back. As she struggled, the pressure just became firmer, though not very painful, and she was forced to sink to her knees. Toph attempted to break the hold, writhing as hard as she could, ”No! Did you guys take my bending?! Get away from me!” The girl continued to scream and struggle, though she was vaguely aware of someone telling her that they were sorry, but they didn’t want her hurting herself. A small pain bloomed in her arm and she felt a hot burning seep through her veins until it spread out as a dull warmth all across her body. And then there was nothing again.
