The Outside and the In
Face Claim/PB
Kellan Lutz
Appearance: Zoro is a pretty muscular guy. Years of intense training have left him extremely fit and with a well-defined physique. He's lucky enough to tan easily, but his tan is littered with scars he's gotten from various fights he's been in - the most prominent one being a large scar that stretches from his left shoulder to his right hip. He's fairly tall, standing at about 6'2", which only adds to his imposing figure. He keeps his hair - an odd bright green - cropped short. He has a perma-scowl on his face, and he looks quite serious at all times. His eyes are a mirror for his emotions; while he can put a stoic expression on to save face, his green eyes will reveal what he's really feeling.
Zoro isn't big on fashion. If he could, he'd wear the same outfit every day until it was completely torn to shreds or so filthy that it reeked. He usually sticks with a simple white shirt, long black pants, and combat boots. If it gets unbearably hot, he'll switch to wearing shorts or a slightly baggy shirt, but he never switches from his boots. He's never seen without his green haramaki with his three swords tucked in on the right side, his black bandana tied around his left arm, and the three gold earrings on his left ear.
Personality: Zoro comes across as quiet and distant at first. He does his best to come across as calm and in complete control of his emotions, but in doing so, he acts aloof and often uncaring. He's practically always frowning, and he takes most things seriously. However, Zoro is prone to losing his temper, usually in extremely comical ways. He also has a tendency to sleep constantly, and will fall asleep in the middle of a conversation if he's particularly bored.
Zoro has an extremely strong sense of leadership and honor. He is unwavering from his decisions - and those of his captain - and he'll support those decisions with all his might. Occasionally, if he thinks something has been overlooked, he'll step up and point out how serious things are, but for the most part he remains quiet. He refuses to fight in dishonest ways and upholds a form of Bushido, unless someone he really cares about is in danger.
Despite the code he holds himself to, Zoro is a ruthless fighter. He has an intense and intimidating aura about him when he fights, and lesser opponents have stepped down from fighting him before the fight even began. He is merciless in fights, and will kill if the fight reaches that point. He sees no problem with cutting someone down if it furthers his goals. He has an extremely kind heart, though, and will risk his life for people he's just met, if he deems them worthy. He doesn't go all out in fights unless he thinks his opponents can handle it either, and will hold back against weaker opponents.

Right Up to that Key Moment
History: Zoro grew up and trained at a dojo in Shimotsuki Village. He became rivals with the Dojo master's daughter, Kuina, and the two constantly pushed each other to grow stronger with their rivalry. No matter how many times he challenged her, Zoro constantly lost. He finally challenged her to a duel with real swords after his 2000th loss, but the result was the same; Zoro was defeated. He confided in Kuina that his goal was to become the world's greatest swordsman, only to discover that she held the same goal. The two promised that one or the other would become the world's greatest swordsman someday.
Unfortunately, Kuina didn't live to see that goal achieved. The next day, she fell down the stairs of the dojo and died. Zoro blamed himself, because if they hadn't fought with real swords the day before, Kuina wouldn't have been going into the dojo to get a sharpening stone for her sword. He took it upon himself to achieve their collective goal, and he took Kuina's sword, Wado Ichimonji, to honor her memory. From that point on, Zoro began developing his own three sword style of fighting.
Zoro left the dojo when he heard of the man who held the title of the world's greatest swordsman: Dracule Mihawk. He set out to sea, searching for the man so he could challenge and defeat him. Of course, his terrible sense of direction got him lost, so he was forced to become a bounty hunter to survive, and soon he had garnered the nickname "Pirate Hunter". He was considered by some as the greatest swordsman in the East Blue, and was actively sought out to join Baroque Works, an infamous group of bounty hunters. He rejected the offer solely because they wouldn't let him lead their organization.
Eventually, Zoro arrived in Shells Town, where a bad run-in with the Marines led to him being tied to a pole for a month. It was here that he met Luffy. At first, he flat-out refused to join the pirate's crew, at least until Luffy promised to get his swords back. Luffy lived up to his promise, freeing Zoro and the two defeated the tyrannical Marine captain.
From there on, Zoro's memories are fuzzy at best. He remembers meeting each of the members of Luffy's crew, up till they reached Sabaody Archipelago, but he doesn't remember much besides their faces and a few of their names. However, he does remembers how he obtained all his swords, and the two major times he was defeated: in his fight against Mihawk, and his brief confrontation with Bartholomew Kuma.
Key Moment: Zoro was taken mere seconds before Bartholomew Kuma separated him from the crew on the Sabaody Archipelago. He was defeated by the Pacifista, but did not undergo any training on Kuraigana Island.

A Roleplaying Shift
RP Sample: Zoro was in pain.
The wounds he'd received on the Thriller Bark had never really healed, but he'd never been one to let injuries hold him back, no matter how severe. It didn't help that he'd had to fight an exact look-alike of Kuma on the damn archipelago. The mere sight of the giant of a man had sent shivers up his spine, and he couldn't look at the guy without having flashbacks to the pain he'd taken in return for Luffy's life. It had taken everything he'd had to continue fighting and help finish off the thing, and then it had ended up being some robot... thing. Zoro didn't know what it was, and frankly, he didn't want to know.
And it hadn't ended there. Another Kuma-bot had showed up, along with some Admiral. All Zoro could remember was getting pounded into the ground and being in more pain then he had ever experienced. His head was spinning, his vision kept fading in and out, and he couldn't hear half the time, but he'd kept trying to stand. He had to fight. It was his job.
After that... Well, he couldn't really remember. He could have sworn he'd seen the real Kuma, but everything went black after that. It could have been a dream, for all he knew. Now all he felt was the aching of overused muscles, the burn of his injuries, and the heat of the midday sun on his face.
Zoro groaned as he cracked open his eyes and shifted from where he was laying, trying to ignore the pain shooting up his... well, his everything. It hurt, but he had to move. He had to protect... someone. A lot of someones. He couldn't quite remember who, but did that really matter? People were in danger, and who was he to sit by idly as people died? Rolling onto his stomach, the swordsman slowly shoved himself to his feet, staggering as his head spun. Shit... he'd lost a lot of blood.
The swordsman heard something rumbling nearby, a sound that he didn't recognize. In an instant, he had Sandai Kitetsu and Shusui unsheathed and at the ready, whirling around to face his opponent.
Or, what he thought was his opponent. He found himself face-to-face with a man in a plain black suit, and Zoro frowned as he vaguely recalled someone, a blond that wore almost that exact same suit. Distaste surfaced with that particular memory, and Zoro decided that he must not like this blond guy with the weird eyebrows. The man in front of him now didn't look like the blond, so Zoro knew it wasn't someone he knew. Which meant enemy.
"You look just peachy," the man stated, a hint of sarcasm slipping into what probably should have been a professional tone. Zoro bared his teeth, snarling wordlessly as he moved to charge the man, only to sink to one knee as a bout of dizziness overtook him. Gasping for air, he shot a fearsome glare at the man, growling, "Who are you? What do you want?"
"Straight to the point, huh? I'm here to help," the man in the suit said. Zoro wasn't certain - mostly because he was still having difficulty ignoring the fact that he wanted to collapse and vomit up anything he'd eaten in the past few hours - but he just felt like the man was lying.
"I don't need help," Zoro growled stubbornly, jamming the blade of Shushui in the ground as he forced himself back to his feet. "I don't need help. I need... The captain needs... They need me." The swordsman staggered forward a few more steps, until fatigue, pain, and bloodloss finally took their toll and he collapsed, blackness quickly spreading over his awareness. He vaguely felt hands rolling him over onto his back, and he heard fragments of a conversation before he slipped into blissful unconsciousness.
"Yeah, we're gonna need a retrieval squad for this one..."
