A Whole New Room (Minnie)

When she had first arrived, the staff of Tenebrae had been nice enough to supply her with a brush. It was for this reason that Jasmine spent every morning brushing her hair while contemplating what she was going to do. It usually didn't amount to all that much. Most of the time it was just a general outline of where she was going to explore. But now, she was finally done with that. She had seen everything except for a few of the shops. So today, she was going to meet people. And not just any people, some of the other students. Or, at least one other student. It was weird that she only knew a couple of the other students. It was like this place was made up of mostly adults, which she was sure it wasn't.

Jasmine put the brush back and picked up her necklace. It was the beautiful golden necklace that her mother had owned. Her father had given it to her not long before Jasmine was born. It really meant a lot to her, having both of her parents with her in a sense. She shook her head slightly to jar herself from her thoughts without messing up her hair. She couldn't mess it up right after she brushed it! She slipped the necklace on and headed out the door.

Jasmine looked around. There was no one else in the dorm's first floor. Well, no one that was out and about. Not that there was much of a reason to be just hanging out in the dorms. Jasmine started towards the exit, but stopped when she realised that the room right next to hers had its door slightly ajar. She walked up to it and pushed it open gently. "May I come in?" she called.

Minnie was rather shell shocked, or, rather, shift shocked I guess. There was was always a bit a fear about such a new world and a new body and a new...everything! Mostly, however, Minnie just felt extremely overwhelmed. It was like this new set of senses was amplified somehow and she couldn't possibly hope to cope with all the sudden changes at once. If the fact that no one from her world seemed to remember her wasn't enough, the events at the welcome barbecue had pushed her over the edge. She needed some time to herself to just sit and try to process everything, though she wasn't particularly used to going through trauma like this by herself. In fact, she wasn't used to going through anything by herself. Mickey had always been by her side weather she wanted him to be at the moment or not. He was always there for her, always, but not this time. Who knows where he is or if he is alright. Who knows if she is even alright! Maybe she was having some kind of mental breakdown. Maybe she was in a coma...no no then Mickey just would have given her true loves kiss and she'd be back by now. Ooooh she shouldn't have yelled at him like that just before she'd disappeared.

Oooooh Minnie whimpered pitifully, pulling the blanket she was cocooned in tighter around herself. The strange people in suits had tried to explain everything and they had filled her room with things that suited her tastes. Even her blanket was red a white polka dots, but she still couldn't quite get her head around the fact that she was no longer animated. She stared at her new appearance in the floor length mirror across from the bed she lay curled up on. Her long, brown hair hung off the side and Minnie stretched her hand out of her safety blanket to touch it. She'd never had such long and beautiful hair before. Her fingers floated up to touch her face as she sniffled and wiped at the tear that trailed down her cheek. She looked like a princess, which is all she ever wanted, but she was also who knows how far away from home. What was she even supposed to feel?

oh! Minnie suddenly squeaked when her door was suddenly pushed open and accompanied by a gentle question. Oh... She repeated, sitting up quickly and rushing to dry her tears. She let the blanket fall off her head and fixed her hair a bit, but she still looked rather disheveled.

Y-yes! Yes please! she squeaked.

Jasmine heard some sort of moaning coming from inside before she got her answer. She felt like she should be worried, but she was just too excited to meet someone new. She took a few steps into the room. Her eyes remained on her feet when she said, "I jsut wanted to come by to meet you. We're going to be neighbors, so it's good that we be introduced." She sounded overly formal. Had the thoughts of her parents minutes ago brought this on? She shook her head again, this time not minding her hair, and looked up. "Hey, I saw you at the barbeque."

Then, the full scene hit her. The girl was wrapped up in a red blanket with white polka dots. It was rather nice, but that wasn't what caught Jasmine's attention. The girl's hair was all disheveled and something seemed off about her. And now that she thought about it, the way she had said that Jasmine could enter was strange. She rushed up to the bed to kneel by the girl. "Are you okay?" she asked.

Minnie blinked rapidly in hopes of clearly them of their teary fog as she listened to the girl with, perhaps, an overdose of attention. A soft smile lay on her lips, though it seemed sadder than usual and she could get her eyes to light up with their usual spark despite her best efforts. She nodded cheerily as she spoke and placed a hand on ehr chest to convey how touched she was that her neighbor would be so kind as to visit. Minnie loved visitors she truly did, though right now probably wasn't the best time she could have wandered in. Still, Minnie didn't do well on her own, so perhaps a friend is exactly what she needed in this moment.

The girl was taller and tan with lovely black hair. She looked familiar somehow, but Minnie was too busy focusing on keeping her tears in at the moment to think too further into it. She let out a pitiful huff when she mentioned they'd seen each other at the barbecue and Minnie had to rush a hand up to wipe a tear again, though she smiled and nodded to confirm that she remembered. Oh yes... She said, trying to seem very fond of the memory Wasn't that....exciting? she decided. She wouldn't call the events bad, but she certainly didn't entirely enjoy them either. It had just added to her pile of overwhelming happenings since she'd arrived, really. Then the girl really seemed to notice Minnie's state and hurried to be by her side. How kind! So she hadn't been as convincing with her cheeriness as she had hoped, but having someone try to comfort you wasn't terrible.

Ooooh dear Minnie breathed, wiping away another few stray tears. I suppose it's just a lot to take in, isn't it? she said with a gentle smile. I must admit I've never been a human before. She said, pouting her lip slightly and hoping the strangeness wouldn't frighten the girl away. She suddenly shook her head, however and put on another kind smile. Oh my! she said with a breathy laugh.

I almost forgot! My name is Minnie, Minnie Mouse.

"You could say that," Jasmine said with a little laugh. So the girl wasn't quite so bad off as she had thought. Or, it didn't seem that way. Maybe the barbeque had just been too much for her. It had been a little... crazy. She would bet that even the suits were shaken by the strange events, even if they wouldn't show it.

"It is a lot, but it's not too- oh. So you weren't human before. May I ask where you're from, then? And what you used to be? I myself have always been a human, but never like this. I'm enjoying the freedom of it all," Jasmine rambled on. It was nice to meet another person who had once been something other than human. They were really some of the nicest people she had met. But now that she thought about it, hadn't she only met two people that were human before the Shift?

"That's an interesting name. I'm Jasmine, and it's very nice to meet you, Minnie."

The fact that she hadn't previously been a human really seemed to interest the other girl. That made Minnie smile a bit, some how it comforted her to see the amazing curiosity in the young lady's eyes. Minnie couldn't quite decide how so, but she somehow believed that it was right for that girl to be so inquisitive. It allowed Minnie to forget her stresses for a moment and just revel in the human mind and it's ability to retain and reuse so much knowledge. Minnie felt blessed that, although she had been drawn as a mouse, her mind had always been one of a humans with the ability to walk and talk and understand and discover. She may look different, but her brain and heart seemed to remain the same. She had to assume that this woman's transfer from worlds must have happened in a similar fashion which really made the former mouse wonder if she could have been from the House of Mouse. Freedom, she said, Minnie's mind jumped to a certain princess who always seemed to be keen on the idea.

Oh! Minnie chirped to convey the pleasant surprise of hearing Jasmine's name. Her suspicious were all but confirmed having heard the title, but Would Princess Jasmine recognize Minnie Mouse? This wasn't like Rapunzel who had never been a part of the House of Mouse. Jasmine and Aladdin had visited very often. Oh, perhaps this shifted jumbled everything up including memories or even universes. Minnie couldn't help, but feel terribly sad about having to start all over with a long time friend. Perhaps This was a different Jasmine than she thought after all. There really was only one appropriate way to be sure.

I mean... she cleared her throat softly to cover up for her pervious outburst. Looking a bit embarrassed she continued. I'm very pleased to meet you too, Miss Jasmine. Minnie bubbled And I don't mean to sound strange, Minnie continued with a light giggle but do you happen to be a princess? She finished, a bit sheepishly.

"Yes, I am a princess," Jasmine said with a sad little smile. She had never been quite so happy about being a princess, except before her mother died. Her life had ben easy then. But then she had died and Jasmine hd to deal with her overprotective father. And later, the stress of having to find a suitable husband. At least that part she had gotten out of.

"Wait, how did you guess? Did someone else tell you?" Jasmine inquired. This was something that really interested her. Was it possible that the other Shifted were talking about her? What could they be saying? Or had this girl been an animal she had met in Agrabah without even realising it. Because she certianly only knew two smart animals, and they were both male. So when could they have met? What type could she be? There were no mice in Agrabah, at least none that she had seen. So maybe that wasn't it. But how had Minnie heard that she was a princess? Jasmine really hoped the other Shifted weren't saying anything bad about her. She was thinking too much. Jasmine took a deep breath and waited for Minnie's response.

Minnie beamed at first when Jasmine confessed that she was, indeed, a princess, but the smile melted into something sadder as the young lady continued with her questions. Minnie was excited to see her friend again sure, but it tore at her heart to realize that Jasmine was acting like they had never met. She should have expected this anyway, what with all the strange magic that had pulled them here, it's no wonder memories and time lines were all jumbled up. She shouldn't let it drag her down too much. After all, she could have landed here all alone, but instead she had found several people that she knew even if they hadn't quite gotten to know her. That's alright, it doesn't take long to make friends and it could be fun to have a fresh start anyhow. Minnie had a chance here to start over, even if it was just for a little while. She was sad about all she had left behind, sure, but in this moment there was a certain lifting of her heart. She couldn't dwell on the past forever, she had to take each new day as it comes. So her and Mickey were apart...you know what....good. Ouch, okay that hurt a little, but maybe they needed some time apart, you know? They had been fighting a lot and she had really been feeling that he just didn't care for her like she did him. They had literally been made for each other, but that was in their world. She wasn't in their world anymore.

Minnie blinked and took a breath, realizing that she had been staring at a fixed point on the floor with a determined expression for a little too long. She looked up at Jasmine and let out a little, embarrassed giggle. Oh dear, I'm sorry. She began, nervously fidgeting with her hair. I suppose I just have a lot on my mind. She concluded sheepishly. It was a lucky guess, I suppose. The little girl uttered with another sweet chuckle. Minnie figured she best not get into the fact that she used to know Jasmine very well. If this was meant to be a fresh start, she should let it be one and forget her past for a bit. And, to answer your question from earlier. Minnie rushed, suddenly recalling what she had forgotten to answer. I was a mouse once, you see. She said. Okay, so perhaps it was no good to forget all of her past.

"Oh, do I look like a princess? I hadn't really thought about that," Jasmine said. She knew that most of the time, it was easy to tell whether someone was a royal or a peasant. But she had spent enough time trying to blend in with the peasants that it worked pretty well for her. Minnie must be a very perceptive girl. But maybe the clue was her necklace. It was more elegant than wha most peasants could wear, but this world didn't have peasants. Most people seemed able to afford a necklace like it. So, what could it be? Jasmine let the train of thought go. It wasn't going anywhere, and she was in a conversation with Minnie.

"A mouse? That's very interesting. Is that what you go your last name from?" Jasmine asked the questions almost rhetorically, but an answer would be nice. It was always nice when her suspicions were confirmed.

Minnie's heart swelled as Jasmine asked her first question. You see, Minnie had always wanted to be a princess all her life, what little girl didn't? To live the royal life with tiaras, carriages, and princes, and to feel loved all the time by so many people. It was a dream, but Minnie was all about the possibility of dreams coming true. Even if not every little girl could grow up to spend her day in a far away castle, every little girl could be a princess. Lucky for most, being a princess wasn't all about the things you got, but how you acted and what was in your heart. To be a princess all you had to be was good and, of course, yourself. Jasmine not only had the royal life, but she had the heart of a princess and a warrior. It just made Minnie so happy to even be given the chance to reconfirm the lovely girl's well earned title.

Of course you do, She said with a beaming grin You're beautiful. Minnie bubbled, and se meant it. With the corner of her eye she caught her movement in the mirror behind Jasmine and let her gaze drift to focus on it for a moment. Even with her hair messed and her eyes a bit red from the crying. Minnie had to realize she looked more like her dream princess than she had ever been before. Being a mouse wasn't all bad, but it could be difficult to fit in when there aren't many like you and hair. Minnie had never had the opportunity to style her hair since it was always so short and all over. With the vision of all the fun possibilities in the future, the former mouse smiled again and turned her eyes back to meet with Jasmine's as she began to speak again.

Oh... Minnie had to think about the right way to answer for a second, bringing a hand up to gently touch her lips. Yes She decided with a smile. That made sense didn't it? After all these years, Minnie had never stopped to think about the reasoning behind her name except for that it matched with Mickey's. Yet, now two people here had asked about it. How strange.

"Oh," Jasmine blushed, "Thank you. No one's said that to me in such a long time." Her mother used to tell her that she looked beautiful, but few had done it since. Today she was thinking a whole lot about her mother. Ithad started with the necklace, but now it was because of Minnie. Minnie seemed a lot older than she looked, maybe she had kids of her own. Jasmine would ask, but that would be a little rude, wouldn't it?

"I thought so," Jasmine said, returning Minnie's smile. Of course she thought so, she was the one to ask about it. Eh, Jasmine wasn't embarrassed about it. "Um... Minnie, do you have any children?" she finally decided to ask. It had been bothering her since she had thought of it just a minute before. Hopefully Minnie wouldn't find it offensive.

Minnie kept a kind smile on her face, though her stomach twisted a bit when she mentioned that no one had mentioned her beauty in a while. That wasn't right. A princess like Jasmine deserved to be told that she was beautiful everyday, several times a day. She was meant to have a prince to remind her every moment that she was more breathtaking than the last. That was how fairytales worked in their world and it's why Minnie always pined after their life. She, of course, had had the opportunity to play several roles that involved her become something of a damsel in distress to be rescued by her white knight, but she'd never had the real thing. Or what a life that would be to be kissed upon the hand and wear a pretty little tiara. They may seem a bit material, but you couldn't say that it wouldn't be nice. That was the life that had been given to Jasmine, yet here she was without any of it. Even her dear Aladdin was nowhere to be seen. Minnie thought it sad, though perhaps Jasmine was blissfully ignorant of most of her previous having. Minnie didn't have the heart to bare such news and, anyway, perhaps it was better she find a new life without lamenting things that she didn't know she had.

Jasmine moved on to speak about her last name and seemed pleased to have her suspicions confirmed. Minnie was glad to oblige such a simple question, though she'd not though about it much before. Then Jasmine moved on to ask a rather peculiar question and one Minnie had never, in her 84 years, been asked before.

No. Minnie said as she struggle to keep the fall of her heart off her face. The word seemed to knock the air from her lungs as she realized just how terrible it was to her to not have been able to start a family after all this time. Perhaps it was a big reason why her and Mickey had been having so many problems. She had vowed not to dwell on him, for now, however, and so tried to move her thoughts on. Longing clung to her heart, though, and tugged at it in hopes of dragging it to a darker place. How cruel was it to be drawn with such a motherly instinct and never be allowed to have a child of her own.

"You'll make a wonderful mother some day," Jasmine decided to say. If she didn't have kids of her own, Minnie had to be pretty young, right? Someone that would make a good mother like her would have kids young, she would think. Jasmine's thoughts quickly changed to when she would be a mother. She'd do such a terrible job of it, she was sure. But she wouldn't make the same mistakes her father made.

But her father hadn't made all that many mistakes, had he? The only thing he really did was keep her from going outside. Yet being stuck in a castle was like an extended punishment. She couldn't do much of anything in there. And if Jasmine fixed that one mistake, would she really be a good parent? No, she'd still do something wrong, she was sure of it. "Unlike me," she confided with a sigh.
